Hommes 022 | Shipboard Shaving Scene | Vintage Photography Poster
A tattooed sailor carefully shaves another man’s face while several companions gather around to watch. With white uniforms, hanging towels, and a crowded shipboard setting, this remarkable historical photograph preserves an everyday ritual among men serving at sea.
Hommes 022 brings this intimate moment of naval life into the contemporary home as a restored and colorized vintage photography poster.
THE PHOTOGRAPH — Estimated to date from approximately 1935–1945, the original photograph depicts five men gathered in a shipboard interior. At the center, a seated sailor with shaving lather across his cheeks and chin receives a shave from another man wearing a white sailor cap and sleeveless undershirt. The man holding the razor steadies his companion’s face with one hand. Tattoos cover portions of his arms, including a prominent marking on his upper arm.
Behind them, another sailor peers between their shoulders. A fourth man stands against the wall, while a fifth observes from the lower-right foreground. A horizontal metal fitting supports several hanging towels. Wooden deck boards, pale walls, and a round opening above the standing sailor contribute to the maritime setting. The identities of the men, photographer, vessel, and location remain unknown.
EVERYDAY LIFE AT SEA — Photographs of naval service frequently emphasize ships, uniforms, and military ceremonies. Hommes 022 instead documents a routine personal-care activity shared among men in close quarters. The photograph’s significance lies in its attention to ordinary experience: grooming, physical proximity, informal observation, and companionship within a shipboard environment.
Part of the Walt & Pete® Hommes Collection, the image contributes to a broader visual history of male social life without presuming the identities or relationships of those pictured. The reproduction has been digitally restored and colorized. Its colors are contemporary interpretations rather than verified historical details.
DISTINCTIVE MARITIME WALL ART — With its expressive faces, intricate tattoos, and layered composition, Hommes 022 offers an engaging focal point for a study, library, bathroom, dressing room, or maritime-inspired gallery wall. Its restrained palette complements dark wood, antique brass, nautical objects, and vintage interiors.
