hommes 025 | Sailors Reading aboard USS Lexington | November 1943 Vintage Photograph Framed Canvas
An open book rests above the deck boards, while four sailors form a closely arranged group beside the ship’s edge. Bent knees, cuffed trousers, and worn shoes give the foreground its varied lines; open water fills the background. Hommes 025 presents this restored historical photograph as a contemporary framed matte canvas reproduction.
Photographed by Edward Steichen aboard USS Lexington (CV-16) in November 1943, the scene records enlisted men reading at the edge of an elevator. The National Archives preserves the image under local identifier 80-G-470981. This documented account places the ordinary activity of reading within a specific wartime shipboard setting.
On the left, a reclining sailor holds an open book. Near the center, another looks down at smaller reading material, with two companions positioned beside him. Short-sleeved shirts, dark trousers, and a single white cap distinguish the figures. The mesh barrier and repeated deck planks provide structure around their overlapping poses.
In a study, library, or maritime-inspired gallery wall, the horizontal composition brings together the visual interests of books, historical portraiture, and shipboard life. Its tightly gathered foreground contrasts with the wide expanse of water, offering both a clear focal point and details to revisit up close.
This restored photograph brings men's visual culture into the contemporary home. Across portraits, workplaces, and everyday settings, the collection attends to clothing, held objects, and group arrangement. Presented within Walt & Pete®’s broader LGBTQ+ archival mission, these images invite close looking while respecting the limits of what is known about the people pictured.
