THE MEANING OF THE WREATH

The lignum vitae (Guaiacum officinale) is celebrated for its remarkable strength and distinctive beauty. Its Latin name translates as “wood of life,” reflecting the tree’s historical association with endurance, healing, and longevity.

Recognized as Jamaica’s national flower, the lignum vitae produces blue-violet blossoms, dense green foliage, and golden-orange fruit capsules that open to reveal vivid red seeds. These natural colors already evoke much of a Pride palette, making the plant especially meaningful for a design centered on perseverance and identity.

In this illustration, two lignum vitae branches cross at the lower center before sweeping upward into a broad, open laurel-style wreath. Flowers, buds, fruit, seeds, and mature leaves appear at different stages of growth, representing identity as something living—rooted in history, strengthened through adversity, and continually unfolding.

THE ARTWORK

Inspired by antique natural-history plates, the wreath combines engraved-style linework, hand-colored botanical detailing, subtle pigment variation, and an archival illustration finish.
