paire 159 | Framed Vintage Photo - Matte Canvas

This vintage photograph is part of the Ephemera of Us: Vintage Photo Collection, within the section titled “paire” — the French word for “pair.” The designation reflects the presence of two men pictured together in a moment of visible closeness. While it is impossible — and historically inappropriate — to determine the sexuality or personal identities of the individuals depicted, the composition conveys a quiet intimacy through gesture, proximity, and shared gaze. Such images have often been described by scholars as representations of “affectionate men,” a visual category that acknowledges documented forms of male tenderness and companionship in earlier eras. Whether understood as friendship, kinship, or something more personal, the photograph preserves a moment of male relational closeness that challenges modern assumptions about emotional expression between men.

The image presented here has undergone careful digital preservation using contemporary restoration technologies, including AI-assisted stabilization, tonal repair, and historical colorization. All interventions were guided by archival photo conservation principles and fine-art print standards, with the aim of maintaining period character, photographic softness, and material authenticity while improving legibility for modern viewers. It stands as a testament to both the layered ways intimacy was lived and recorded in the past and to the evolving methods used to safeguard fragile visual history in the present.

Original Photograph Record

Title: Two Sailors in White Shirts and Neckerchiefs, One Kissing the Other's Cheek
Date (estimated): c. 1935–1945
Photographer: Unknown
Place of Production: Unknown
Medium: Gelatin silver print (probable)
Dimensions: Small-format photobooth print, 3 x 3 in.

Original Photo – Condition & Preservation Status

The photograph exhibits pronounced warm discoloration, with yellow-brown tonality particularly evident in the background and lighter clothing. Dark areas retain substantial density but show reduced shadow separation.

Visible condition issues include scattered dark specks, fine linear marks, localized abrasions, and irregular tonal variation. Darkening and wear are apparent along portions of the perimeter, particularly near the upper and lateral borders.

Facial features remain clearly recognizable, although highlight detail is diminished in the white cap and portions of the shirts. The original photographic tonal balance cannot be established without examining the physical object.

Conservation assessment would help distinguish chemical deterioration from original processing characteristics and determine appropriate preservation measures.

Material, Process & Historical Placement

The photograph is most consistent with a gelatin silver print, the predominant black-and-white photographic process used for commercial and amateur portraiture during the mid-twentieth century.

Two men wearing naval-style clothing appear in a tightly framed portrait against a vertically textured backdrop. The figure on the left faces the camera with a slight smile. The figure on the right, wearing a white sailor cap, turns toward him with pursed lips positioned against or immediately adjacent to his cheek. Their arms are positioned around one another's shoulders.

The clothing and composition are compatible with informal naval portraiture of the Second World War era. Such photographs formed part of the broader expansion of accessible personal photography among military personnel.

The absence of provenance, inscriptions, and physical examination prevents definitive identification of the subjects, geographic location, service affiliation, or circumstances of production.

Collector’s Summary

Probably dating to circa 1940–1945, this presumed gelatin silver print depicts two men in naval-style clothing, one appearing to kiss the other's cheek. Despite discoloration, surface marks, and reduced tonal separation, the photograph remains a legible example of informal mid-twentieth-century military portraiture.
