Paire 163 | Two Victorian Men in Hats and Waistcoats

Two men in buttoned waistcoats and brimmed hats pose together in a late Victorian photographic studio. Their formal expressions, carefully arranged clothing, and elaborate fringed studio furniture create a compelling glimpse into nineteenth-century portrait photography. Paire 163 brings this historical double portrait into contemporary interiors as a restored and colorized vintage photography poster.

Provisionally dated to 1890–1900, the original photograph depicts two unidentified men arranged closely around an upholstered studio stool. The man on the left wears a light shirt, dark waistcoat, trousers, and a straw boater with a contrasting hatband. He rests one hand on his hip and faces the camera directly. His companion wears a darker brimmed hat, patterned shirt, buttoned waistcoat, and dark trousers. A prominent mustache distinguishes his appearance.

The composition includes a fringed upholstered seat, a small wooden footstool, and a decorative metal studio fixture along the left edge. The plain backdrop directs attention to the men’s clothing, posture, and facial expressions. Their dress and the studio furnishings support an estimated date near the end of the nineteenth century. The photographer, place of production, and subjects’ identities remain unknown.

Commercial photographic studios provided opportunities for individuals to preserve carefully constructed images of themselves and their companions. Double portraits such as Paire 163 offer evidence of historical menswear, personal presentation, and the visual conventions through which men appeared together before the camera. Within Walt & Pete®’s Paire Collection, the photograph contributes to a broader examination of male companionship and queer visual history without assigning undocumented relationships or identities to its subjects.

The reproduction has been digitally restored and colorized. Its colors are contemporary interpretations rather than verified historical details. With warm neutrals, dark waistcoats, and a balanced composition, Paire 163 complements traditional libraries, studies, bedrooms, offices, and curated gallery walls, particularly alongside dark wood, antique brass, and leather-bound books.
