Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 002 - The Reading of the Duty Roster
Portrait No. 002 of 250
Companions of Liberty is Walt & Pete®'s signature collection of 250 original museum-inspired historical portraits created to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Drawing upon Revolutionary War scholarship, surviving military artifacts, period artwork, and documented eighteenth-century material culture, the collection explores the everyday experiences of the men and women whose lives shaped the American Revolution.
While celebrating America's founding era, the collection also reflects Walt & Pete®'s broader mission of preserving LGBTQ History, Gay History, Queer History, and overlooked historical narratives through thoughtful storytelling, fine art, and historical education. Each portrait invites collectors to look beyond famous battles and discover the humanity that defined an extraordinary generation.
The Reading of the Duty Roster depicts two Continental Army enlisted soldiers seated inside winter quarters during the winter campaign of the American Revolution. One soldier carefully studies a handwritten duty roster while the other rests a hand upon his shoulder. Between them sits an open wooden campaign chest containing neatly folded blankets, military equipment, and personal effects, all illuminated by the warm glow of a hanging lantern and nearby hearth.
The interior has been reconstructed using documented Revolutionary War material culture, including period military clothing, administrative records, campaign furniture, and winter architecture. Rather than depicting combat, the painting captures a quiet moment of military routine, emphasizing the responsibilities, endurance, and discipline that defined daily life within the Continental Army.
Why These Stories Matter
History is often remembered through battles and celebrated leaders, yet much of the American Revolution unfolded in moments like these—when orders were read, duties assigned, supplies organized, and soldiers prepared for another day of service. By preserving these quieter aspects of Revolutionary life through historically informed artwork, we gain a deeper appreciation for the thousands of ordinary individuals whose perseverance helped shape the nation's founding. These overlooked stories enrich our understanding of military history while reminding us that history is ultimately the story of people.
